He received his MA in Education and taught Bible and coached for 17 years at Columbia Academy. He began attending South Gate in 2001 as the part time youth minister. Following that, he served as the youth deacon for 10 years. In 2015 he stepped out of his teaching role and became the pulpit minister at South Gate. Carmel, IL. He graduated from David Lipscomb College in 1977 with a major in mathematics and a minor in physics and in 1992 received a master’s degree in education. While at Lipscomb, he met Rosemary Johnson and they married in 1978. For the next ten years, they lived in Illinois with Joe teaching during this time as well as preaching for the Grayville Church of Christ. Their four children were born during this timeframe. In August of 1988, the family moved to Columbia and he began teaching at Central High School. In January of 1989, Joe began preaching for the Southpoint Church of Christ. Also this year he started teaching the Wednesday night adult class at Eastside and continues to this day. He worked with the Southpoint congregation for nearly 15 years. In September of 2003, he began working with the Eastside/South Gate congregation as an associate minister. After 38 years, he retired from public school teaching but continues to this day teaching God’s word. He attended Freed-Hardeman University and received his BBA in Finance in 1997 and his MA in Education in 2003. He taught and coached for 25 years at three different schools. While living in Sumner Co. he served at the youth minister for the Birdwell’s Chapel church of Christ in White House, TN. Jerry came to South Gate in 2015 and has served as an elder here since 2020. In July of 2023 he began his work as the Education and Family minister. He graduated from Freed-Hardeman University in 2021 with a degree in Biblical Studies, emphasizing Youth and Family Ministry, and a minor in Psychology. He married his wife, Emilee, in the summer of 2024. Jesse and Emilee have loved building deep relationships with the South Gate Student Ministry and their families. Curtis speaking. Approximately 50 people were present and the contribution was approximately $150. Earlier in the year, the Riverside congregation (now North View) made the decision to go to Ninth Street and vicinity with the Gospel. Brethren Wayne Ball, Clarence Holman, J.C. Cheek, Howard Maxwell and Jimmy Wilson volunteered to go to do the work. The building was leased to Riverside for 12 months. If interest was sufficient, they would then build. In September of the same year, Clyde Balderson began work as the first regular preacher. In October, 1953, the site of the old Eastside building was purchased from Ulna Huckaby. The congregation name was changed to Eastside church of Christ. Dedication of the new building took place in December, 1954. Because of continued growth, additional classrooms were added in 1958, and a 500-seat auditorium was dedicated in 1968. In 2012 a new campus was built on Pulaski Hwy and the Eastside congregation started meeting in the new building in November under the name South Gate.
